Japanese Father Warned After Leaving 7-Year-Old Son Alone on Mount Fuji
A 48-year-old man was reprimanded by police for leaving his young son unattended on Mount Fuji while he continued climbing with his older child.
According to reports from Khaosod Online, citing BBC and Japan Today, a 48-year-old Japanese man has been reprimanded by police after leaving his 7-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji for several hours. On August 20, the boy was discovered sitting on a bench at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, near the sixth station of the Fujinomiya trail, equipped only with snacks and a soft drink. The area was experiencing foggy and rainy weather conditions at the time.
The father reportedly instructed the boy to wait there after the child complained of fatigue, while he proceeded to climb higher with his older son. Staff at a mountain hut noticed the child alone and alerted the authorities. Police eventually located the father at the eighth station, approximately three hours away by foot. The father has since apologized for his impulsive decision. Police emphasized that leaving a child behind is unacceptable, regardless of the circumstances surrounding a climb.
For travelers and residents, this incident highlights the extreme physical demands of Mount Fuji and the importance of group safety. While the father has been warned, it remains to be confirmed if any further legal actions will be taken by local authorities.
