Transnational Arms Smuggling Ring Dismantled in Trat
Thai authorities have intercepted a transnational arms smuggling operation in Trat province, seizing a significant cache of weapons and ammunition.
On August 21, 2026, a joint operation between the Royal Thai Navy and the Trat Marine Police resulted in the arrest of a suspect involved in a transnational arms smuggling ring. According to Rear Admiral Parat Rattanachaiphan, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy, the operation took place at the Direk Pier in Laem Ngop District, Trat Province.
Authorities reported that the smuggling network utilized speedboats to transport weapons from Cambodia across the sea before attempting to dock at the pier. During the raid, officials seized two AK-47 assault rifles, 102 magazines, and 23,640 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. While one male suspect was apprehended, other members of the group managed to escape during the confusion and remain at large.
For residents and travelers in the Trat region, this incident highlights ongoing efforts by security forces to monitor maritime borders and curb illegal trafficking. While the immediate threat at the pier has been addressed, the investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to track the remaining suspects.
