Koi Carp 'Retrieves' Jade Pendant in Unusual Tourist Incident

A tourist visiting a scenic spot in Suichang, Zhejiang Province, China, experienced an unusual event when a jade pendant they were wearing accidentally fell into a koi pond. Rather than sinking, the jewelry was seized by a koi carp, which refused to release it.

According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the incident required staff intervention as the fish continued to swim around the pond with the pendant in its mouth. Officials initially doubted the tourist's report, assuming it was a prank, but confirmed the situation upon arrival. The recovery process proved difficult, as the fish remained mobile for five to six hours. Staff eventually tracked the fish’s movement and used a net in shallow water to retrieve the jade and return it to the owner.

While staff noted that small items are frequently dropped into the pond and easily retrieved, this is the first time a fish has held onto an object for such an extended period. The story has gained attention online, with many social media users interpreting the event through the lens of Chinese cultural symbolism, where koi represent good fortune and jade signifies virtue. However, experts have clarified that the fish's behavior does not necessarily carry a deeper meaning. For travelers, this serves as a reminder to secure personal belongings when visiting water features at tourist attractions.
