Thailand Aims to Accelerate Direct Bangkok-Auckland Flights
Thai officials are working to launch direct flights between Bangkok and Auckland earlier than the previously scheduled 2028 target.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Ekniti Nitithanprapas announced on August 21, 2026, that the government is pushing to establish direct air travel between Bangkok and Auckland ahead of the original 2028 timeline. This initiative follows discussions between the leaders of Thailand and New Zealand, who view the route as a vital link to bolster tourism, trade, and bilateral relations.
For travelers and residents, this development could significantly reduce transit times and improve connectivity between the two nations. Ekniti has tasked Lavaron Sangsnit, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Chairman of Thai Airways, with overseeing the project. The airline is currently coordinating with Auckland Airport management to secure flight slots in advance.
Despite the push for an earlier launch, several factors remain to be confirmed. The feasibility of the route depends heavily on Thai Airways' fleet expansion plans and the timely delivery of new aircraft to ensure sufficient service capacity. While the government has initiated preliminary preparations, a definitive start date has not yet been set, and the project remains subject to operational readiness and fleet availability.
