Flooding Cuts Off Village Access in Ubon Ratchathani
Heavy rains and rising Mekong River levels have isolated a village in Khong Chiam district, forcing residents to rely on boats for transport.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 21, 2026, persistent heavy rainfall since August 7 has caused significant flooding in Ban Huai Mak, located in the Huai Phai sub-district of Khong Chiam, Ubon Ratchathani. The situation has been exacerbated by the Mekong River, which has backed up into the Huai Mak creek, causing water levels to rise by over three meters.
This surge has submerged a 200-meter stretch of the primary road leading into the village, effectively cutting off vehicular access. Approximately 40 households are currently affected, with residents forced to use flat-bottomed boats to navigate in and out of the area for their daily needs. In response, the Huai Phai Subdistrict Administrative Organization has secured a flat-bottomed boat from the Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Administrative Organization to assist with transport. Additionally, the Mekong Riverine Unit at the Khong Chiam station has deployed personnel to monitor the situation and provide support.
For travelers and residents in the region, this event highlights the potential for localized infrastructure disruption during the monsoon season. While the immediate access issue is being managed by local authorities, those planning travel to remote areas of Ubon Ratchathani should monitor local weather reports and road conditions. It remains to be confirmed how long the water levels will remain elevated and when road access will be fully restored.
