Moei River Flooding Triggers Border Security Alert in Tak
Heavy rainfall has caused the Moei River to overflow, impacting communities in Tak province and prompting authorities to monitor border areas for potential illicit activity.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 21, 2026, persistent heavy rainfall has led to flash flooding in the Mae Sot district of Tak province. The Moei River, which marks the border between Thailand and Myanmar, has overflowed its banks by approximately one meter, causing significant disruption to the Rim Moei market and surrounding areas.
Local authorities have issued warnings to residents across 10 sub-districts in two districts, advising them to move belongings to higher ground. While water levels in the Mae Sot municipal area have begun to recede, officials remain concerned about the ongoing rainfall in the mountains and the rising water levels along the border.
Of particular note to residents and those in the vicinity is the heightened security monitoring at the border. The flooding has submerged 'No Man’s Land,' an island in the middle of the Moei River often associated with illicit trade. Authorities are currently observing the area closely, fearing that individuals may attempt to exploit the flood conditions to smuggle goods into Thailand.
Travelers and residents in the Tak border region should exercise caution, monitor local weather updates, and follow instructions from provincial authorities.
