Pollution Response Center Established Following Nan Province Flooding
Thailand’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has launched a specialized center to monitor and mitigate environmental pollution risks caused by ongoing floods in Nan province.
On August 21, 2026, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin ordered the Pollution Control Department (PCD) to establish the 'Nan River Basin Flood Pollution Response and Resolution Center.' According to Khaosod Online, the initiative aims to monitor environmental hazards and prepare systematic recovery plans to protect public health as floodwaters recede.
PCD Director-General Dr. Surin Vorakitthamrong stated that officials are actively surveying high-risk sites, including waste disposal facilities, wastewater systems, and industrial sources. In Nan, authorities have identified 8 gas stations, 11 hotels, and 2 shopping malls as priority areas for inspection to prevent chemical or fuel leaks. Residents and farmers have been advised to relocate agricultural chemicals and hazardous materials to higher ground to prevent water contamination.
For residents and travelers in the region, this development highlights potential risks regarding water quality and waste management in the aftermath of the floods. The PCD is currently coordinating with local administrative organizations to establish temporary waste storage sites and organize the collection of damaged furniture, appliances, and household debris. While the center is now operational, the full extent of environmental impact and the timeline for complete waste removal remain to be confirmed as the situation evolves.
