Police Investigate Infant Death in Rayong After Illegal Abortion
Authorities in Rayong are investigating the death of a 6-7 month-old fetus after a 23-year-old woman reportedly used online-purchased medication to induce an abortion.
On August 21, 2026, police from Pluak Daeng Station and rescue teams discovered the remains of a female infant buried behind a construction worker camp in Pluak Daeng District, Rayong Province. According to Khaosod Online, the fetus, estimated to be 6-7 months into gestation, was found inside a cardboard box placed within an electric rice cooker.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a 23-year-old woman, who already has one child, purchased abortion-inducing medication online due to an unplanned pregnancy. After the medication caused the fetus to be expelled and subsequently die, relatives reportedly buried the remains and performed a ritual intended to prevent the infant's spirit from disturbing the mother. Rescue workers have since exhumed the body for a formal forensic autopsy.
For residents and visitors, this incident highlights the severe legal and health risks associated with the use of unregulated, online-purchased medical products in Thailand. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have stated that they will summon the woman for questioning and potential legal proceedings once she is discharged from the hospital.
