AI-Planned Hiking Trip Leads to Rescue in China

A Chinese man required a rescue operation after following an AI-generated hiking itinerary that led him into dangerous, undeveloped terrain.

According to Khaosod Online Thailand, a man from Suzhou, China, sought to relieve stress following a domestic dispute by asking an AI to plan a therapeutic hiking trip. The AI analyzed his physical profile and recommended 'Tonggongjian,' a remote area in Lin'an, Hangzhou. The man drove approximately 200 kilometers to the site, unaware that the location is not an official tourist trail and features dense, rugged terrain.

While attempting to hike the area at night, the man slipped, sustaining injuries to his feet and knees. He became stranded at an altitude of over 1,300 meters in total darkness, eventually forcing him to contact local authorities for assistance. A rescue team consisting of seven rescuers and two police officers was dispatched to locate him.

This incident highlights the potential risks of relying on artificial intelligence for travel planning, particularly in wilderness environments where AI may lack real-time data on trail safety or difficulty levels. For travelers and residents, this serves as a reminder to verify AI-generated suggestions against official maps and local safety guidelines before venturing into unfamiliar terrain. It remains to be confirmed whether the AI platform involved has updated its safety protocols or if the man has fully recovered from his injuries.
