Thai Government Maintains Majority Ownership Requirement for Starlink
The Thai government has confirmed that SpaceX must adhere to local ownership regulations to operate in Thailand, potentially delaying Starlink's entry.
According to a report by the Thai Enquirer, the Thai government is upholding a mandate requiring Thai investors to hold a majority stake in any Starlink operation within the country. Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaichanok Chidchob stated on Friday that SpaceX is required to comply with these local ownership rules, despite the existence of regional exemptions and ongoing trade discussions with the United States.
For residents and travelers, this development suggests that high-speed satellite internet access via Starlink may not be available in Thailand in the immediate future. While the service is widely used in other parts of the world to provide connectivity in remote or underserved areas, this regulatory hurdle remains a significant barrier to entry for the provider.
What remains to be confirmed is whether SpaceX will agree to these ownership terms or if the government will offer any specific concessions during future negotiations. As of now, the government has shown no indication of waiving the majority Thai ownership requirement, leaving the timeline for Starlink’s potential launch in Thailand uncertain.
