International Coalition Condemns Israeli Settlement Expansion Plans
The UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Canada have issued a joint statement opposing Israel's plan to auction 1,200 new housing units in the West Bank.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, a coalition including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Canada has formally condemned Israel’s decision to auction construction contracts for over 1,200 residential units in the occupied West Bank. The nations labeled the settlements illegal under international law and urged Israel to immediately withdraw the plans.
The project, located in the E1 area east of Jerusalem, has been delayed for decades due to international pressure. Critics, including Palestinian representatives, argue that this development would effectively bisect the West Bank and isolate East Jerusalem, severely undermining the viability of a two-state solution. The coalition’s statement, released on August 20, highlighted concerns regarding rising settler violence and economic restrictions in the region, noting that these actions damage Israel’s international standing.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot have also voiced strong opposition, describing the E1 project as a threat to a unified Palestinian state. While Bedouin communities and Israeli peace groups have challenged the project in court, reports indicate that the legal process is ongoing.
