Thailand Unveils 'Siam Silica Framework' to Boost Semiconductor Industry
The NXPO has introduced the 'Siam Silica Framework' to develop a skilled workforce and increase Thailand's semiconductor export share to 8% within ASEAN.
The Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO) has officially unveiled the 'Siam Silica Framework,' a strategic initiative designed to cultivate a specialized workforce to support Thailand’s semiconductor ecosystem. According to Prof. Dr. Surin Khamfong, Deputy Director of NXPO, the framework focuses on high-value-added segments where Thailand holds competitive potential, specifically IC Design, Sensor/Photonics Devices, and Power Devices, while leveraging existing strengths in Advanced Packaging.
This initiative aims to elevate Thailand’s semiconductor export share to 8% of the ASEAN total. By prioritizing these specific sectors, the government intends to optimize resources rather than attempting to develop the entire supply chain simultaneously. For residents and expatriates, this move signals a long-term shift toward a more technology-driven economy, potentially creating new high-skilled employment opportunities and fostering industrial growth in tech-centric regions.
While the framework outlines a clear strategic direction, specific timelines for implementation and the exact budget allocations for workforce training programs remain to be confirmed. Observers will be watching to see how effectively the government can integrate these educational initiatives with private sector demand to achieve the stated export targets.
