Government Bank Expands EV Loans and Solar Energy Support

Thailand's Government Savings Bank has increased its EV loan budget by 5 billion baht following high demand and is rolling out low-interest financing for residential solar panel installations.

According to Khaosod Online, the Government Savings Bank (GSB) has announced an additional 5 billion baht in funding for electric vehicle (EV) loans. This follows the full allocation of the initial 5 billion baht budget, reflecting strong consumer interest in the transition to electric mobility. GSB Director Vitai Ratanakorn indicated that if this new tranche is exhausted, the bank may consider further increases.

In addition to EV support, the GSB and the Government Housing Bank are spearheading initiatives to provide low-interest loans for residential solar panel installations. Over the past month, approximately 1,000 customers have applied for these loans. The government plans to provide subsidies to offset installation costs for upcoming projects, though specific interest rates for these solar loans have not yet been finalized.

For residents and property owners, this initiative may lower the barrier to entry for adopting renewable energy. However, the bank notes that solar investment is most cost-effective for households that consume at least 50% of their electricity during daylight hours and have roofs with optimal sun exposure. While the government has committed to supporting these installations, the exact interest rates and the full scope of the subsidy program remain to be confirmed.
