According to a report by Khaosod Online citing Reuters, a fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata, West Bengal, in the early hours of Wednesday, August 19, 2026. The blaze reportedly started around 2:50 a.m. on the second floor of the building, which is situated in a densely populated area of the city center. Firefighters managed to bring the flames under control within one hour.
Authorities have confirmed that at least nine people lost their lives in the incident. Among the deceased are five Bangladeshi nationals, four of whom were members of the same family. Additionally, six other Bangladeshi citizens sustained injuries. Reports from ANI indicate that the group had traveled to Kolkata for medical treatment. One child is among the victims.
While initial assessments suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, police have stated that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause. This incident follows a previous hotel fire in New Delhi this past June, which resulted in 21 fatalities and over 40 injuries.
