Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rains and High Seas Forecast Across Thailand
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions across multiple regions due to an active monsoon trough.
On August 19, 2026, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued an alert regarding severe weather conditions affecting large parts of the country. A monsoon trough currently positioned across the upper North and Northeast, combined with an active low-pressure cell in the upper South China Sea and a strong southwest monsoon, is driving the instability.
Residents and travelers should anticipate isolated heavy rains throughout Thailand, with the potential for very heavy rainfall specifically in the Northern, Northeastern, and Eastern regions. The TMD warns that these conditions may lead to flash floods, water overflows, and landslides, particularly in low-lying areas and regions near foothills.
Maritime conditions are also significantly impacted. The upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand are experiencing waves between 2 and 3 meters, with heights exceeding 3 meters during thundershowers. In the lower Andaman Sea, waves are expected to reach approximately 2 meters, rising higher during storms.
Authorities advise all vessels to exercise extreme caution and avoid areas experiencing thundershowers. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are specifically advised to remain ashore. While the current forecast highlights these risks, individuals in affected areas should monitor local updates for further developments and potential changes to these weather patterns.
