Sa Kaeo Border Economy Faces Stagnation Following Conflict
Trade at the Sa Kaeo border has plummeted from 120 billion baht to zero, prompting calls for urgent government intervention and recovery measures.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on August 19, 2026, the border economy in Sa Kaeo province remains in a state of collapse. Tawee Sodsong, leader of the Prachachat Party, highlighted that annual trade volume, which previously reached 120 billion baht, has dropped to zero following border conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia. Although active fighting has ceased, the local economy has yet to recover, leaving residents, entrepreneurs, farmers, and laborers to bear the financial burden of the crisis.
Between July 19 and 20, 2026, the House Committee on Law, Justice, and Human Rights visited Sa Kaeo to study the legal, security, and economic impacts of this situation. Tawee has proposed five measures to assist in the systematic restoration of the area, urging the government to prioritize the rehabilitation of the border trade sector.
For travelers and residents, this situation indicates that the region is still experiencing significant economic instability. While the area is no longer an active combat zone, the lack of commercial activity may affect local services, supply chains, and general infrastructure.
