Thailand to Discuss Household Solar Rooftop Subsidies This Week

According to Khaosod Online, the Loan Screening Committee is scheduled to meet this week to discuss a new initiative aimed at reducing the financial burden on households installing solar rooftop systems. The program is being developed under a 200-billion-baht budget allocation dedicated to national energy transition.

Jindarat Viriyataweekul, Director of the Public Debt Management Office, stated that the project is a collaboration between the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA). The proposed model involves providing direct subsidies to households alongside loan options from state-owned financial institutions.

For residents and property owners, this initiative could eventually lower the upfront costs of transitioning to renewable energy. However, key details remain unconfirmed. The exact subsidy amount has not been finalized; officials noted that the figure could vary from previous reports of 50,000 baht. The proposal is currently under review by the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Finance, and the electricity authorities. Once these discussions conclude, the committee will finalize the funding structure before submitting it to the Cabinet for formal approval. Additionally, the committee is expected to review separate proposals regarding energy transition projects within the public transport sector.
