Lamphun Province Promotes 'Mon Thong' Durian as New Quality Source

According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, Lamphun province is diversifying its agricultural reputation beyond its famous longan crops. In August 2026, Lamphun Governor Piyapong Chuwong visited the 'Mon Durian Mae Tha' orchard to highlight the region's emerging status as a source of premium durian.

The orchard, located in Tha Sop Sao sub-district, Mae Tha district, is a family-run operation spanning 19 rai. Owned by Sutin Janwan, the farm is being transitioned to the next generation, with his son Chutipon Janwan—a recognized 'Young Smart Farmer'—taking an active role. The farm’s origin is notable, as Sutin, who primarily operates a heavy-vehicle repair business, initially began planting trees on a small plot of land that was previously used for longan and banana cultivation.

For residents and travellers, this development suggests that Lamphun is becoming a viable destination for agricultural tourism and high-quality local produce. The positive reception of the durian’s flavor profile indicates it may soon compete with more established durian-growing regions in Thailand. While the initial promotion has been successful, it remains to be confirmed how large the total harvest volume will be in future seasons and whether the province will implement broader infrastructure to support increased agritourism visitors to these specific orchards.
