Thai Student Secures UK Grant for Solar Water Project in Nakhon Sawan

According to a report by Khaosod Online, Waranthorn 'Rung' Kangsanant, a 17-year-old student currently attending the United World College of the Atlantic (UWC Atlantic) in the UK, has launched an initiative to improve water access in Mae Le, Nakhon Sawan. The project was inspired by her 2023 visit to Wat Sam Yaek Phatthana, where she observed that the local community struggled with insufficient, unclean, and odorous water supplies during the dry season.

To address this, Rung applied for and secured funding from the 'Lighthouse' program, a UWC Atlantic initiative that supports student-led social innovation projects. She identified that the existing manual hand-pump well, installed by the Department of Water Resources over two decades ago, was inadequate for the village's needs. Utilizing the grant, she has commissioned contractors to install a 1 HP solar-powered groundwater pump and a storage tank tower to provide a more reliable and cleaner water source for both the temple and the surrounding community.

For residents and visitors, this project highlights ongoing efforts to modernize rural infrastructure in Thailand. While the installation of the solar pump and storage tower is underway, the long-term maintenance plan for the equipment and the specific impact on the community's water quality metrics remain to be confirmed as the project progresses.
