CP Group and Pid Thong Lang Phra Foundation Transform Udon Thani Farming
A collaborative agricultural project in Udon Thani is helping local farmers transition from seasonal crops to high-value greenhouse vegetable production.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, a partnership between the Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group and the Pid Thong Lang Phra Foundation has successfully revitalized agricultural practices in the Ban Khok Lam-Saeng Aram community of Udon Thani province.
Following a severe drought in 2020, the organizations launched the 'Greenhouse Vegetable Cultivation to Solve Drought' project. This initiative focuses on water-efficient farming techniques, modern management, and technology to produce high-value crops suitable for modern trade retail markets. Local farmer Angkana Kamathip noted that the shift from traditional annual field crops to monthly vegetable production has provided community members with a more stable and consistent income.
For residents and visitors interested in Thailand’s agricultural development, this project highlights a shift toward sustainable, technology-driven farming in rural areas. The community enterprise now consists of 28 core members and 15 network growers, operating 52 standardized greenhouses.
While the project has demonstrated success in stabilizing local livelihoods and improving product quality, it remains to be seen how these small-scale community enterprises will scale their operations to meet the long-term demands of larger retail chains. Further updates on the expansion of this model to other drought-prone regions in Thailand have not yet been confirmed.
