Cholera Outbreak in Yangon Prompts Border Surveillance in Thailand
Thai health authorities have increased border monitoring following a confirmed cholera outbreak in Yangon, Myanmar, which has resulted in 149 cases and one death.
On August 18, 2026, Dr. Montien Khanasawat, Director-General of the Department of Disease Control at the Thai Ministry of Public Health, announced heightened surveillance along the Thai-Myanmar border due to a cholera outbreak in Yangon. According to reports from Khaosod Online, Myanmar health officials have recorded approximately 500 cases of severe diarrhea since August 9. Of these, 149 individuals tested positive for cholera, with nine cases confirmed by the National Health Laboratory of Myanmar as Vibrio cholerae.
One death has been reported, involving an elderly patient with pre-existing heart and lung conditions. The majority of cases are concentrated in central Yangon, an area noted for its high density of street food vendors. In response, Myanmar authorities have initiated water and food quality inspections, increased chlorination of water systems, and temporarily suspended the sale of high-risk street food.
