Thailand Reports Slight Decline in International Tourist Arrivals

According to data released by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Surasak Phancharoenworakul, announced that Thailand welcomed 19.76 million international tourists between January 1 and August 15, 2026. This figure represents a 2.91% decline compared to the same period in 2025, generating a total revenue of 957.618 billion baht.

The top five source markets for visitors during this period were China (3,330,481), Malaysia (2,496,831), India (1,456,696), Russia (1,140,441), and South Korea (729,367).

Regarding the most recent weekly data (August 9–15), the Ministry noted a slowdown in arrivals. This is attributed to the end of the summer school holiday season in China and a temporary lull in Malaysian travel ahead of the upcoming Maulidur Rasul holiday. Conversely, the Japanese market showed resilience, marking its second consecutive week of growth with a 13.71% increase compared to the previous week.

For travelers and residents, this data suggests a cooling period in tourism volume, though specific market segments like Japan remain active. It remains to be seen whether the upcoming holiday periods will stimulate a rebound in arrival numbers for the remainder of the third quarter. Travelers should monitor local holiday schedules, as these often influence regional travel patterns and crowd levels at major tourist destinations.
