Phuket Authorities Investigate Reports of Discrimination at Foreign-Owned Businesses
Phuket officials have launched inspections of foreign-operated businesses in Patong following complaints that some establishments refused service to Thai customers.
On August 17, 2026, Phuket provincial authorities, led by Deputy Governor Police Captain Khetarat Chansilp, conducted inspections of businesses in the Patong sub-district of Kathu. According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the operation was initiated following public complaints alleging that certain foreign-owned shops were refusing service to Thai nationals.
Accompanied by provincial employment and local administrative officials, the team examined business operations, management structures, and documentation. The inspection is part of a broader government policy to regulate foreign business activities, specifically targeting potential 'nominee' arrangements where Thai citizens are used to circumvent foreign ownership laws. Authorities also specifically inspected businesses that primarily cater to foreign groups, including those using Hebrew signage for advertising.
