Thailand’s NIA Launches Deep Tech Startups into Japanese Market
The National Innovation Agency (NIA) is accelerating Thai deep tech startups toward the Japanese market, with two initial partnerships already formalized.
On August 18, 2026, Dr. Krithpaka Boonfueng, Director of Thailand’s National Innovation Agency (NIA), announced a strategic push to expand Thai deep tech startups into Japan. This initiative, part of the 'Startup Thailand Deep Tech Venture 2026' program, aims to scale innovative businesses that rely on complex research and intellectual property rather than traditional business models.
According to the NIA, two Thai startups have already signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with Japanese firms. The agency emphasizes that deep tech—which involves rigorous incubation and patent protection—is a high-growth sector supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) through various academic and research institutions.
For residents and expatriates in Thailand, this development signals a shift in the local economy toward high-value, research-driven industries. As Thailand aligns its innovation ecosystem with global leaders like Japan, the country may see an increase in specialized job opportunities and collaborative technological projects.
While the initial partnerships have been confirmed, details regarding the specific nature of the technologies involved and the long-term financial impact of these MOUs remain to be seen. The NIA continues to monitor the progress of these startups as they navigate the Japanese market, with further updates expected as the program matures.
