According to a report by Khaosod Online citing Focus Taiwan, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has announced a plan to provide a cash handout of 10,000 New Taiwan Dollars to every citizen in the coming year. This initiative follows a reported 14% economic growth in the first half of 2026, with annual growth projections reaching a 39-year high.
President Lai’s office stated that the government has revised its 2027 revenue forecasts upward to 3.9266 trillion New Taiwan Dollars. This adjustment allows for an additional 235.7 billion New Taiwan Dollars in expenditure, intended to ensure that the benefits of the nation's AI-driven economic success are shared among the public. The government emphasized that citizens will have the freedom to use these funds for various purposes, such as education, elderly care, household expenses, or supporting local businesses, while maintaining a balanced budget with minimal new borrowing.
For residents and travelers, this policy reflects a period of robust economic activity in Taiwan. However, it remains to be confirmed who exactly will be eligible for the payment, as the Presidential Office has not yet released specific criteria regarding the distribution process.
