Chiang Mai University Advances PM2.5 Mitigation Research

Chiang Mai University is continuing its three-year 'AIR for All' initiative to combat northern Thailand's seasonal haze through systematic research and technological innovation.

According to a report by Thai Post, Chiang Mai University is actively pursuing its 'AIR for All: Research & Innovation to Impact' program. Led by Associate Professor Dr. Somporn Chantara, director of the program and head of the university’s academic working group on haze, the initiative focuses on developing systematic solutions to address PM2.5 dust pollution in Northern Thailand.

The project, which is supported by funding from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) for the 2024–2026 fiscal years, aims to translate academic research into practical, sustainable applications. By integrating new technologies and management mechanisms, the university seeks to create long-term improvements in air quality for the region.

For residents and travelers, this ongoing research is significant as it represents a structured effort to mitigate the severe seasonal haze that frequently impacts Northern Thailand. While the program is currently in its implementation phase, the effectiveness of these specific technological interventions in reducing annual pollution levels remains to be confirmed. The initiative highlights a continued commitment to addressing environmental health concerns through scientific innovation, though the immediate impact on air quality during the upcoming burning seasons will depend on the successful deployment and scalability of these research-backed solutions.
