Thailand Proposes 'Solar Rooftop' Initiative to Ease Installation Costs

According to Khaosod Online, the Thai Ministry of Energy is currently finalizing a new measure aimed at increasing residential solar rooftop adoption. Ministry spokesperson Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen stated that the government is working to streamline the installation process, targeting a seven-day approval window for residential systems and a 30-day window for those wishing to sell excess electricity back to the grid.

To reduce the financial barrier to entry, the government plans to utilize a 50-billion-baht budget to support the installation of solar systems for up to one million households. The proposed model allows residents to install panels without an initial down payment, with costs covered by low-interest loans from state-owned banks like the Government Savings Bank and the Government Housing Bank. Repayments would be integrated into monthly electricity bills, effectively using the savings generated by the solar energy to offset the cost.

For residents and long-term visitors, this initiative could eventually lead to lower utility costs and a more sustainable energy footprint. However, the program is still in the development phase, with officials expecting a final conclusion on the implementation details within one month.
