Khon Kaen Zoo Welcomes New Giraffe Calf
Khon Kaen Zoo has announced the birth of a female giraffe calf, marking a milestone in their wildlife breeding program.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, Khon Kaen Zoo has successfully bred a new female giraffe calf. The calf was born on May 13, 2026, at 7:00 AM and is currently three months old. She is the offspring of 'Khem,' a sire imported from abroad, and 'Baifern,' a dam transferred from Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo. This birth represents the ninth calf for Baifern and brings the zoo's total giraffe population to three.
For visitors and residents, the zoo has opened the skywalk, allowing guests to observe the calf and her mother from a distance. This provides a unique opportunity to see the new addition in a naturalistic setting. However, the zoo management, led by Director Tipawadee Kittikhun, has emphasized that the calf is under close veterinary supervision. To ensure the health and proper development of the young animal, the zoo has restricted direct interaction, meaning visitors are currently prohibited from feeding the giraffes.
While the calf is healthy and growing, the zoo continues to monitor her nursing, growth, and behavioral patterns. Future updates regarding when visitors might be allowed closer interaction or feeding opportunities remain to be confirmed by zoo officials as the calf matures.
