Suspect Killed in Failed Grenade Attack During Drug Raid in Chiang Rai

On August 18, 2026, a joint operation involving the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB), military forces from the Pha Muang Task Force, and local authorities executed a search warrant in Huai Chomphu, Chiang Rai. The mission aimed to apprehend a suspect named Silachai, who is wanted on charges related to the distribution of Category 1 narcotics (methamphetamine).
According to Khaosod Online, the situation escalated when an unidentified man at the scene opened fire on officers with a shotgun. The suspect then attempted to throw an explosive device at the law enforcement team. The grenade failed to clear the immediate area and detonated near the suspect, resulting in his death at the scene. One officer, Police Sub-Lieutenant Treepongsak Klangthaisong, sustained injuries to his left arm from shrapnel and was transported to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital for treatment.
