Thailand Rejects 'ASEAN Police' Allegations Amid Cross-Border Crime Dispute
Thai officials have denied claims that the country is acting as an 'ASEAN police' force following accusations from Cambodia regarding its stance on transnational crime.
On August 18, 2026, Air Chief Marshal Prapas Sonjaidee, Director of the Thai-Cambodian Situation Information Center (JIC), addressed recent accusations from Cambodia. Cambodian officials had alleged that Thailand was acting as an 'ASEAN police' force and using the suppression of scam networks as a pretext to interfere in Cambodian internal affairs.
In response, Air Chief Marshal Prapas stated that Thailand does not seek to act as a regional police force nor does it intend to interfere in the domestic affairs of other nations. He emphasized that Thailand remains committed to addressing transnational crime, which impacts citizens globally, and that this objective should not be conflated with issues of national sovereignty or diplomatic processes involving Myanmar. He urged that the focus remain on factual realities rather than political rhetoric, noting that the fight against scam syndicates is a distinct issue from territorial or diplomatic matters.
