Mass Fish Die-off Reported in Chiang Mai’s Mae Mao River
Authorities in Fang District are investigating a significant fish mortality event in the Mae Mao River, suspected to be caused by toxic contamination.
On August 17, 2026, Khaosod Online reported a mass die-off of various fish species along the Mae Mao River in Pong Nam Ron sub-district, Fang District, Chiang Mai. Local officials, including police and fisheries representatives, inspected the site after residents observed large numbers of fish floating dead or struggling near the Ban Hua Fai and Ban Mon Pin Nuea weirs.
Preliminary inspections revealed that the gills of the deceased fish were dark, leading officials to suspect exposure to high concentrations of toxic substances. The area is situated near agricultural zones, including orange orchards, which are being considered as potential factors. Officials have collected samples for laboratory analysis to determine the exact cause of the contamination.
For residents and visitors, authorities have issued a stern warning against consuming or selling the dead fish, as they may pose significant health risks. This incident is particularly concerning as the fish were reportedly full of eggs, marking a loss for local conservation efforts. Similar events were previously recorded in the area in 2023. While the investigation is ongoing, the public is urged to avoid contact with the water and fish until further notice. The source of the suspected toxins remains to be confirmed by official testing.
