State Railway of Thailand Studies Double-Track Rail Link to Malaysia

On August 17, 2026, officials from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and local government representatives gathered in Songkhla to present the findings of a feasibility study for a new double-track railway project. The proposed line would span from Hat Yai Junction to Sungai Kolok, aiming to establish a stronger rail connection with Malaysia.

According to SRT Deputy Governor Anan Phonimdaeng, the study evaluates the economic, engineering, and environmental impacts of the project. The initiative is framed as a government-backed effort to enhance the quality of life for residents in the four southern border provinces by improving transportation infrastructure and regional logistics.

For residents and travelers, this project represents a potential long-term shift in how people move between Southern Thailand and the Malaysian border. Improved rail capacity could eventually offer a more efficient alternative to road travel, potentially boosting local tourism and cross-border trade.
