Khon Kaen Hospital Addresses Online Controversy Regarding Patient Care
Khon Kaen Hospital has clarified that a social media user who made insensitive comments to a patient was not a staff member, following the death of a 50-year-old woman.
On August 17, 2026, Khon Kaen Hospital issued a statement regarding a viral social media controversy involving a patient who passed away. The incident began when a 50-year-old woman, who had been seeking treatment, posted online about long wait times. A social media user, initially perceived by the public as a hospital nurse, responded with insensitive remarks suggesting the patient should go home to die. The patient subsequently collapsed in a hospital restroom and later died.
Dr. Thanasit Praiphong, Director of Khon Kaen Hospital, clarified that the individual who made the offensive comments is not an employee of the hospital. He expressed condolences to the bereaved family and provided a timeline of the patient's care. The patient had been admitted three days prior with symptoms including fever, chills, and a rash. While hospitalized, she received blood tests, X-rays, and antibiotics for a suspected bloodstream infection. On August 16 at approximately 4:00 a.m., staff discovered her unconscious in the restroom, initiated emergency protocols, and performed a CT scan.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights the importance of verifying information circulating on social media during sensitive medical situations. While the hospital has denied staff involvement in the online harassment, the exact cause of the patient's sudden collapse and subsequent death remains under medical review.
