Thailand’s Disaster Department Implements Cell Broadcast Alerts for Flood Risks

On August 17, 2026, the Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), Teerapat Kachamat, provided an update on the current flood situation in Thailand. Speaking at Don Mueang Airport, he confirmed that while there are no major storms currently entering the country from the Pacific, the department is closely monitoring flash floods in specific areas and rising water levels in parts of the Mekong River.

To improve public safety, the DDPM has begun deploying the 'Cell Broadcast' system. This technology allows for rapid, location-specific mobile alerts to be sent directly to residents' phones, providing faster warnings than traditional methods. This system is being used in conjunction with local community broadcast towers to ensure that those in flood-prone areas are informed of potential risks to their property and safety. The department has already dispatched water pumps to assist affected communities.

For residents and travelers, this means that mobile devices may receive emergency notifications if they are in areas identified as high-risk for flash flooding. While the situation is currently being managed, the DDPM continues to coordinate with local authorities to monitor weather patterns. It remains to be confirmed how much lead time the Cell Broadcast system will provide for specific alerts, as the department continues to refine its notification protocols during this rainy season.
