According to a report by Khaosod Online on August 17, 2026, the Hat Samran Chalerm Phra Kiat 80 Phansa Hospital in Trang province has been utilizing natural black mud to treat patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis. This treatment approach, which integrates traditional Thai medicine with modern medical practices, has been in use at the facility since 2020.

Staff from the hospital’s Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine clinic collect the mud from the Hat Samran beach area. According to Amarin Kianghia, head of the clinic, the mud must be carefully selected during low tide—specifically between the 13th and 15th days of the lunar cycle—when the sediment is soft and pure. The process involves filtering out sand to ensure only the fine black mud is used for therapeutic applications.
