Thai Meteorological Department Issues Heavy Rain Warning for 24 Provinces

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather warning for August 17, 2026, forecasting heavy rainfall across 24 provinces. According to Khaosod Online, the weather pattern is driven by a monsoon trough extending across Myanmar, northern Thailand, and Laos, combined with a relatively strong southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

Residents and travelers in the Northern, Upper Northeastern, Eastern, and Western Southern regions should remain vigilant. The TMD warns that heavy, accumulated rainfall may trigger flash floods, forest runoff, and river overflows, particularly in low-lying areas and regions near mountain slopes.

Maritime conditions are also affected, with the upper Andaman Sea experiencing waves between 2 to 3 meters, and potentially exceeding 3 meters in areas with thunderstorms. The department advises mariners in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to exercise extreme caution and avoid sailing in stormy areas. Specifically, small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to remain ashore during this period.
