Chulalongkorn Academic Urges Rethink of Thailand’s Energy Security Strategy
A petroleum engineering expert warns that Thailand must prioritize energy security over short-term economic profitability as domestic fields reach the end of their lifespans.
According to a report by Thai Post on August 16, 2026, an academic from Chulalongkorn University has cautioned that Thailand’s approach to managing aging petroleum fields requires a strategic shift. The expert argues that decision-making should not be based solely on economic cost-benefit analyses, but must integrate long-term energy security considerations.
The academic emphasized that the expiration of a petroleum concession does not necessarily mean the underlying resources are exhausted. Instead, factors such as technological advancements, continued investment, and operational timelines remain critical for extracting remaining reserves. The expert warned that global market volatility could lead to scenarios where energy supplies become difficult to procure, regardless of available capital, stating that there are times when "having money is not enough to buy what you need."
For residents and travelers in Thailand, this discussion highlights the country's ongoing efforts to manage its energy independence. While this does not imply an immediate change in fuel availability or pricing, it underscores the government's challenge in balancing resource extraction with economic viability. It remains to be confirmed how policymakers will adjust future concession terms or investment incentives to address these concerns regarding long-term energy stability.
