Earthquake Near Northern Sumatra Felt in Southern Thailand
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Northern Sumatra was felt by residents in five southern Thai provinces on August 15, 2026.
On August 15, 2026, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) reported that a 6.4 magnitude earthquake occurred near the northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. According to the Earthquake Observation Division, the tremor was centered at 3.030°N, 99.110°E, at a depth of approximately 175 kilometers. The epicenter was located roughly 417 kilometers southwest of Satun, Thailand.
Khaosod Online reports that the TMD issued a second announcement confirming that residents in five provinces—Phuket, Songkhla, Trang, Satun, and Phatthalung—reported feeling the tremors. While the event caused noticeable shaking in these areas, the TMD stated that the situation did not meet the criteria for a tsunami warning or an emergency alert at this time.
