Mediation Resolves Dispute Over Wat Weluwan Kathin Funds
A legal dispute involving a former abbot and Kathin ceremony organizers in Ranong has reached a resolution following court-led mediation.
A long-standing legal conflict concerning the Kathin ceremony funds at Wat Weluwan in Ranong province has been resolved through mediation at the Ranong Provincial Court. The case began when Phra Khru Phattharasornkhun, the former abbot of the temple, publicly accused three organizers—Mr. Thanit Buakhiao, Mr. Pichai Onthet, and Mr. Suwit Chanchang—of embezzling 1,313,331.99 baht in donations from the 2024 Kathin ceremony.
In response, the three accused individuals filed a lawsuit against the former abbot for filing a false report and defamation. While the defamation charge was dismissed, the court accepted the charge of filing a false report, which remains under appeal at the Region 8 Court of Appeal. During a scheduled witness hearing on July 14, 2026, the court facilitated a mediation process. The former abbot acknowledged that his previous accusations were based on a misunderstanding, confirming that the funds had indeed been collected from devotees for the construction of the temple’s ordination hall. He subsequently issued a formal apology in court.
For residents and visitors, this resolution clarifies the status of the temple's financial integrity and brings an end to a public controversy that had drawn significant local attention. While the apology and mediation address the conflict between the parties, the legal proceedings regarding the false report charge remain pending at the appellate level.
