Dermatologist Clarifies Common Scrotal Bumps After Patient Panic

A Taiwanese dermatologist has addressed a case involving a man who mistook harmless Fordyce spots for a sexually transmitted infection, leading to self-inflicted injury.

According to a report by Khaosod Online, a young man recently sought medical attention in Taiwan after discovering numerous small yellow bumps on his scrotum. Fearing he had contracted a sexually transmitted disease, the patient attempted to squeeze the bumps, resulting in bleeding and significant distress. Upon examination, dermatologist Wu Ren-chin determined that the patient was not suffering from an infection or acne, but rather a condition known as Fordyce spots.

Dr. Wu explained that Fordyce spots are visible sebaceous glands that commonly appear on the scrotum, lips, and genital areas. These spots are benign, non-contagious, and typically do not cause pain or itching. They are not related to viral warts or other sexually transmitted conditions. The doctor emphasized that individuals should avoid attempting to squeeze or pop these bumps, as doing so can cause unnecessary trauma to the skin and lead to bleeding or infection.

For residents and travelers in Thailand, this case serves as a reminder that unusual skin changes should be evaluated by a medical professional rather than treated through self-diagnosis. While Fordyce spots are harmless, persistent or changing skin conditions should always be assessed by a doctor to rule out actual health concerns. It remains important to consult a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis before attempting any home treatment.
