On the morning of August 15, 2026, a significant 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia. According to reports from Khaosod Online Thailand, the tremor occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers at 04:58 local time. The seismic event was followed by several aftershocks, including one measuring 6.1 in magnitude.
In response, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning, prompting the immediate evacuation of hundreds of coastal residents. The shaking was reportedly felt for approximately one minute in areas such as Nagekeo and Bima. While a tsunami wave of less than one meter was recorded, the BMKG subsequently lifted the tsunami alert.
For travelers and residents in the region, this event serves as a reminder of the area's seismic activity. While the National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson, Dody Yuleova, stated that there were no initial reports of injuries or fatalities, the situation remains subject to further assessment by local authorities.
