Thailand Meteorological Department Issues Heavy Rain Warning for August 18–21
Authorities have issued a weather alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across upper Thailand, warning of potential flash floods and rough seas.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has released its first official warning regarding severe weather conditions expected between August 18 and August 21, 2026. According to Khaosod Online, a monsoon trough currently extending across Myanmar and upper Northern Thailand toward a low-pressure area in Vietnam, combined with strong southwesterly winds, is driving this weather pattern.
Residents and travelers in upper Thailand should prepare for heavy to very heavy rainfall. The TMD specifically cautions that these conditions may trigger flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in low-lying areas, near foothills, and along natural waterways. Additionally, the upper Andaman Sea is experiencing strong winds, with wave heights reaching 2 to 3 meters, and exceeding 3 meters in areas affected by thunderstorms. Small vessels in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to remain ashore, while all mariners are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid navigating through thunderstorm zones.
As of August 15, 2026, localized heavy rain is already impacting parts of the North and Northeast. While the warning covers the period through August 21, the exact intensity and specific geographic impact may evolve.
