Thai Immigration Bureau Warns of Impersonators Targeting Foreigners
Thai immigration authorities have issued a warning following reports of individuals posing as officers to extort money from foreign workers in Rayong province.
On August 14, 2026, the Thai Immigration Bureau (IB) issued a public warning regarding criminals impersonating immigration officers. This follows an incident in Ban Khai District, Rayong, where individuals dressed in police-like uniforms entered the homes of Chinese workers. The suspects allegedly coerced the residents into purchasing charity tickets by threatening them with official immigration inspections. Reports also indicate that property went missing from the residences following these visits.
Pol. Col. Parinya Klinkeson, spokesperson for Immigration Division 3, confirmed that local police are currently investigating the incident and gathering evidence. The Bureau emphasized that immigration officers have no policy or authority to solicit donations or sell charity tickets.
For residents and travelers, the Bureau advises that if approached by someone claiming to be an immigration or police officer, you have the right to request official identification, including the person's name, rank, and department. You are also permitted to record video or take photographs of the individuals and their vehicles to assist in verification. If you have doubts about an officer's legitimacy, you should contact local authorities immediately to verify their identity. While the investigation is ongoing, the public is urged to remain vigilant against such intimidation tactics, which the Bureau notes negatively impact the reputation of law enforcement.
