Internal Disputes Paralyze Thailand’s NBTC Board

The core of the dispute involves the eligibility of NBTC Chairman Professor Sarana Boonbaichaiyapruck. The NBTC selection committee previously reached a unanimous decision that the chairman lacks the necessary qualifications, citing potential conflicts of interest regarding his status and concurrent roles in state agencies. The dissenting commissioners argue that participating in meetings led by a chairman whose qualifications are in question could render any resulting resolutions void and potentially expose them to criminal liability.

On August 11, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reportedly signed a petition to submit to the monarchy, requesting the removal of Professor Sarana from his position based on the selection committee's findings. For residents and travelers, this gridlock may impact the stability of telecommunications and media regulation in the country.
