Medical Case Highlights Rare Sinus Complication Following Wisdom Tooth Extraction

According to a report by Khaosod Online, a 20-year-old man experienced severe nasal congestion, purulent discharge, and a foul odor approximately one week after having his upper right wisdom tooth extracted. Dr. Chen Shixi, an ear, nose, and throat specialist, detailed the case, noting that initial antibiotic treatment failed to resolve the patient's symptoms.

Further examination via endoscopy and a CT scan revealed that the patient’s right maxillary sinus was completely filled with pus. Imaging also identified a bone defect in the floor of the maxillary sinus at the site of the previous extraction. Although a dentist confirmed the extraction site had healed properly, the proximity of the tooth roots to the sinus cavity likely facilitated the infection. The patient subsequently underwent Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) to drain the sinus and restore proper ventilation.

While such complications are rare, persistent nasal issues following oral surgery should be evaluated by a specialist.
