Honda Thailand Announces 12 Billion Baht Investment for New Models
Honda Automobile (Thailand) is investing 12 billion baht to launch two new vehicle models while requesting government support on import taxes and hybrid vehicle regulations.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, Koji Iwanami, CEO of Honda Automobile (Thailand), has confirmed a new investment of 12 billion baht to expand production lines in Thailand. This capital injection is designated for the manufacturing of two upcoming vehicle models, with the first scheduled for release by the end of 2026 and the second expected in 2027. This move reinforces Thailand's status as a primary production hub for Honda outside of Japan.
Beyond the investment, Honda, in coordination with six other Japanese automakers and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, has engaged with the Thai government to discuss potential reductions in import taxes for vehicles from Japan. The company argues that such adjustments would foster fairer market competition and provide Thai consumers with a broader range of vehicle options. Additionally, Honda is seeking an extension on current hybrid vehicle regulations. The company noted that while it intends to comply with new standards, it currently faces challenges meeting these requirements for four out of its six locally produced models.
For residents and travelers, these developments suggest a potential shift in the local automotive market, including the introduction of new models and possible changes in vehicle pricing or availability. However, the final outcomes regarding tax adjustments and regulatory extensions remain subject to government review and have yet to be confirmed.
