Thailand to Cap Electric Train Fares at 45 Baht by 2027

According to a report by Prachachat Business, Thailand’s Ministry of Transport is moving forward with a major reform of the electric train ticketing system. Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has announced a policy aimed at reducing the cost of living for commuters by integrating public transport networks.

Under the proposed joint ticketing system, passengers will be charged an initial entry fee of no more than 17 baht, with the total fare for a single trip capped at a maximum of 45 baht. This initiative is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.

For residents and travelers, this change is intended to simplify travel across different rail lines and significantly lower daily commuting expenses. However, several details remain to be confirmed. The Ministry is currently in the process of drafting the necessary legislation and establishing a revenue management system. Furthermore, ongoing discussions with various rail operators are required to finalize the operational framework. While the target launch date is set for the beginning of 2027, the successful implementation of this fare cap depends on the completion of these legal and administrative preparations.
