7-Year-Old Novice Monk Makes History with Patimokkha Recitation
A seven-year-old novice monk has set a new record by successfully reciting the Patimokkha, the fundamental code of monastic discipline, at Wat Saket in Bangkok.
On August 3, 2026, seven-year-old novice monk Trin Apiwansanong made history by becoming the youngest person to successfully pass the examination for reciting the Patimokkha. The Patimokkha consists of the fundamental rules of conduct for Buddhist monks. According to a report by Khaosod Online, the young novice performed the recitation at Wat Saket Ratchaworamahawihan in Bangkok, completing the task in 50 minutes with clear and precise delivery.
Trin, accompanied by Phra Maha Chit Wachirayano, the abbot of Wat Nikhom Phang 16 in Nakhon Ratchasima, visited the temple to perform the 'Samijikamma' ceremony—a traditional act of paying respects and seeking forgiveness—before Somdet Phra Wachirasitthajarn (Thongchai Sukyano), a member of the Sangha Supreme Council. During the ceremony, Somdet Phra Wachirasitthajarn provided guidance to the clergy, emphasizing the importance of maintaining discipline and dedication to religious practice throughout the Vassa (Rains Retreat) period.
