Thailand Announces Timeline for TH-AI Passport Launch
The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has unveiled the registration and launch dates for the TH-AI Passport initiative, capped at 5 million participants.
On August 14, 2026, Minister of Digital Economy and Society Chai Chonchob announced the official timeline for the TH-AI Passport project. According to Khaosod Online, registration for the program is scheduled to begin on August 19, 2026, with the system becoming fully operational on August 31, 2026. The initiative is currently limited to a maximum of 5 million eligible participants.
The project is being funded through the 2026 Digital Economy and Society (DE) Fund. During a meeting at the Ministry of Finance chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, it was noted that the future of the project’s funding for the 2027 fiscal year remains undecided. Officials have requested further details regarding the project's scope and budget utilization following an initial assessment that found the current proposal to be overly broad. The DE Fund currently holds approximately 2 billion baht.
For residents and travelers, this development marks the start of a new digital identification framework. However, specific details regarding eligibility criteria, the exact nature of the passport's utility, and the long-term sustainability of the program beyond the initial phase remain to be confirmed.
