Thailand Targets 45-Baht Maximum Fare for Electric Trains by 2027

According to Khaosod Online Thailand, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced that the government is accelerating the implementation of a unified ticketing system for electric trains in Bangkok and its surrounding areas. Following a meeting of the Joint Ticketing Policy Committee, officials confirmed that the initiative aims to reduce the cost of living and improve public transport accessibility.

The proposed structure includes a base fare not exceeding 17 baht, with a total maximum fare capped at 45 baht per trip for participating lines. This policy is being developed in accordance with the 2025 Joint Ticketing System Management Act, which involves drafting secondary legislation and establishing regulatory mechanisms to manage revenue sharing among various concessionaires.

For residents and travelers, this development represents a significant potential shift in daily commuting costs, aiming to make multi-line travel more affordable. However, the system is still in the preparatory phase. While the government has set a target launch date of January 1, 2027, the final details regarding which specific lines will participate and the technical integration of the payment systems remain subject to ongoing negotiations with private operators and further regulatory confirmation.
